| CHARLIE SMITH LONDON presents ‘Surface Skin’, curated by Sam Jackson, at Gramercy Park Studios, Soho. CHARLIE SMITH LONDON is pleased to announce ‘Surface Skin’, a group exhibition showcasing four women painters who explore the diverse possibilities of painting. Addressing themes of self-objectification, identity, and cultural production, the artists engage with portraiture, iconography, and psychoanalytic symbolism lensed through metaphor, allegory, satire, and humour. Kelli Ali, Marcy Brafman, Sarah Jane Hender, and Rat Face challenge historical representations of women, interrogating their relevance within today’s consumer-driven society. Their work deconstructs and reimagines traditional narratives, offering fresh perspectives that blur the line between past and present. Technically and conceptually, the artists use painting as a space for reinvention—playfully subverting the Western ideals that have shaped their lived experiences. By rethinking representation, they explore the evolving role of women in art and society, positioning their work as both a critique and a celebration of the medium’s possibilities.
