CHARLIE SMITH LONDON is delighted to announce a solo exhibition of British artist Emma Bennett at Gramercy Park Studios in Soho, London. In this exhibition, Bennett presents a series of intimate paintings in her classical style, with exquisitely rendered landscape, still life or interior motifs emerging from black grounds. She meditates on the notion of recurrence—where a specific place or object triggers memories that return persistently and repeatedly. “These paintings include interior spaces seen in reflection; landscapes that emerge from the darkness; and unruly nature creeping along stairs and corridors, intruding through open doors and windows and making its presence felt. Within these intimate paintings is the possibility of both love and loss.” Like an echo, thoughts and feelings reverberate through empty spaces. In emphasizing this, Bennett alludes to the interconnectedness between people, place, time present and time past. Whether atmospheric landscapes or silent interiors, each scene is a quiet contemplation on time and memory, life and loss, presence and absence. Bennett explores how the act of remembering becomes a form of living with the past, where recurrence is not merely the repetition of events, but a cyclical meditation on what endures.
