CHARLIE SMITH LONDON is delighted to present Gina Soden’s solo exhibition ‘Reclamation’ in Soho, London. ‘Reclamation’ is a new series from British artist Gina Soden. Soden is recognised for her photographic work, where she seeks out abandoned and derelict buildings to document mankind’s architectural accomplishments and nature’s governing laws. Soden embarks on arduous journeys to seek out locations throughout Europe, identifying places of beauty in decline and decay. ‘Reclamation’ focuses on nature’s triumph as plants, trees, moss and mould regain spaces. The absence of human life is profoundly felt in industrial, institutional and often solitary environments. A factory floor in Italy once teeming with workers is now nature’s playground; brambles break through a delicate window and roof in an Italian summer camp; a young tree intrudes through the concrete floor of a cotton factory; a once magnificent palace has lost its roof and nature overwhelms its interior. Often haunting and romantic, Soden’s photographs can also verge on the uncanny—in ‘Orchestral’, for example, trees grow through the seats of a group of chairs in a clearing, offering a sense of unexpected, disrupted wonder. We might expect this to be staged, but Soden only photographs environments as she finds them, and this scene was a serendipitous discovery when driving through Belgium. At the heart of this series is a duality between architectural prowess and the fallacy that humankind has any permanent control over nature. Soden laments capitalism’s insensitivity to its effect on abandoned people and places. We are offered a meditation on time, nature, industry and reclamation. The event will take place at CHARLIE SMITH LONDON, Gramercy Park Studios, 25 Great Pulteney Street, Soho, London W1F 9ND. Viewings by appointment only.
